About Greta Buis

Hi, I'm Greta, an artist based in Indianapolis, Indiana.

One of my favorite things to do when I was young was to read, and my favorite genre was fantasy. I was fascinated with stories of dragons and unicorns.  This fascination with fantasy was the start of my journey, but it was only the start to a very long and winding road.

As I finished high school and was looking into future careers, being an artist didn't even make my list. I was convinced, for one reason or another, that I couldn't make a living with art. So, I attended Ball State University and graduated with a degree in Landscape Architecture. I got a job in a related field soon after and was miserable. The company was good to me, the people there were nice, but sitting in a cubicle in front of a computer for eight hours every day wasn't a good fit for me. I started to dread going into work. I didn't realize that this job was preparing me to make a leap into a world that I had previously believed to be untenable.

My foray into art was inspired by a trip to Atlanta, Georgia. My family and I attended a renaissance festival there to celebrate my sister's graduation. One of the booths belonged to an artist. She painted fantastical scenes of dragons, fairies, and other mythical creatures. I soon learned that this was the artist's full time job. She painted and traveled to renaissance festivals around the country selling prints. I was astounded. This opened a brand new opportunity in my mind.

My goal now as a working artist is to create compelling images of fantasy. I want to transport my viewers to another world, like the books I devoured as a child did for me.
